Refuse & Recycling
Overview
The Village of Channahon has contracted with Environmental Recycling & Disposal for refuse, recycling and yard waste pickup services.
Residents with refuse, recycling or yard waste service-related questions, such as missed pickups or cart repair, should contact Environmental at 815-725-4555. Residents with refuse, recycling and yard waste billing-related questions, including senior or disabled veteran discounts, should contact the Finance Department at 815-467-6644.

Residents have a the choice of using a 95-, 65, or 35-gallon cart. All refuse carts have dark green lids. Additional refuse may be placed in a plastic bag next to the cart.
Additional carts are available for rent in 95-gallon size for $6.00 per month. To rent additional carts, please contact Environmental at 815-725-4555.
Acceptable items include household refuse like chip bags, paper towels, plastic bags, and textiles (donate if lightly used) and bulk items.
Unacceptable items include construction/demolition waste, auto parts, tires, household hazardous waste (paint, oil, household cleaners), medical or electronic.
Recycling carts have tan lids and are available in either 95- or 65-gallon size.
Please break down cardboard boxes to keep them from getting stuck in your cart. Do not place plastic bags or liners in the recycling cart. Visit Environmental’s recycling guidelines page for more information on recycling.
Yard waste service is provided weekly between the week of March 15 through the week of December 15. During the months in which yard waste pickup does not occur, residents may use the yard waste cart as an extra refuse cart at no additional charge.
Yard waste carts are only available in the 95-gallon size. All yard waste carts have light green lids.
Service Instructions & Limitations
Branches, shrubbery cuttings, and tree limbs must be less than 4 inches in diameter and bundled to a maximum of two feet in diameter and three feet in length. Bundles must be less than 50 lbs.
Acceptable and Unacceptable Materials
Acceptable items include grass trimmings, shrubbery cuttings, leaves, live Christmas trees, twigs, branches, outdoor plants, and flowers. Tree limbs are also acceptable and should be less than 4 inches in diameter bundled a maximum of two feet in diameter and three feet in length.
Unacceptable items include plastic bags, animal waste, cardboard, concrete, rock, fruits, vegetables, dirt, stone, indoor plants, trees, and stumps larger than 3 inches.
Bulk Collection
Environmental Recycling & Disposal will pickup bulk items weekly. Bulk items must be less than 50 lbs. and reasonably maneuvered by one individual. Residents must schedule pickup for bulk items heavier than 50 lbs. and/or requires more than one person to move. Residents may schedule a pickup by contacting Environmental at (815) 725-4555.
Acceptable items include furniture, carpet (cut 4 ft. in width, rolled, and tied and weigh less than 50 lbs.), mattresses (wrap in plastic), paint (no lid/paint solidified), grills (no propane tank). Unacceptable items include construction, cleanout debris, hazardous waste, auto parts, stumps, riding mowers, tires and items over 50 lbs.
White Goods
Environmental Recycling and Disposal will pick up one appliance weekly. The white good should be placed at the curb by 6 a.m. on your regular service day. Call us at (815) 725-4555 to request pickup 24 hours in advance. Acceptable items include appliances.E-waste pickup through Environmental is available quarterly. You must schedule your pickup at least 24 hours in advance of the pickup day. Additional fees will apply.
Acceptable items include computers/ equipment, TVs, microwaves, stereos, digital equipment, cell phones, video games, microwaves, phones, and small appliances. Unacceptable items include commercially sized electronics.
E-waste pickup days will occur:
- Week of February 24
- Week of May 18
- Week of August 24
- Week of November 16
Channahon residents can also take their electronics to the Channahon Township Highway Department for recycling (25355 Center Street Channahon, IL 60410) on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month from 5-7 p.m.

Please feel free to drop off these items in the green and yellow paper recycling bin located in the south parking lot of the Municipal Center:
- Catalogs
- Hardback books with the cover removed
- Magazines
- Newspapers
- Office paper
- Paperback books
- Spiral notebooks (spiral can stay on)
Note: No phone books or cardboard is allowed.
If you choose to burn your leaves, please do so safely. Leaves can only be burned on private property and burning is not permitted in the right-of-way or on any street. Keep your fire at a manageable size, do not leave fires unattended and avoid burning on windy days.
If a fire gets out of control, call 911 immediately. As a reminder, the burning of grass clippings, large branches or garbage is prohibited.
