Overview
The Village of Channahon Tree Board is an all-volunteer advisory board appointed by the Village Board. Its main duty is to advise the Village on potential threats to the health of trees located within our Village, promote the planting and care of trees and inform our citizens about the benefits of trees. The Tree Board was formed in 1996.
Programs
One of the primary tasks of the Tree Board is to advise the Village on the care of street trees. Trees located in the parkways (between the sidewalk and curb) are maintained by the Village. Due to the presence of the Emerald Ash Borer in Channahon, the Tree Board prepared and the Village Board approved a program to replace Ash Trees in the parkways. View the Tree Replacement Program (PDF) for more details.
Like many communities, the Tree Board’s main promotional event is Arbor Day held on the last Friday in April. For the past 21 years, the Tree Board has held educational events for our children and planted a tree.
The Channahon Memorial Tree Walk was opened in 2011 with the planting of five trees. The Walk provides the opportunity for residents to plant a tree in memory of someone special. In addition to the tree, a plaque identifies the tree and includes a dedication inscription.
Currently, the Memorial Tree Walk is full. If future spots open we will once again open them up for planting.
On October 3, 2011, the Illinois Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) in Channahon. This invasive beetle is native to Asia and was first discovered in southeastern Michigan near Detroit in the summer of 2002. To manage the EAB problem, the Village Board recently approved a plan written by the Village Tree Board. To learn more please view the Channahon Emerald Ash Borer Plan (PDF).
The Channahon Ash Trees Map displays the results of all Ash Trees Collected by the Village of Channahon Tree Survey in the fall of 2012.
The Tree Board keeps a registry of large trees located in the Village. The purpose of the registry is to preserve and to promote these iconic statures and to educate people about the key role that these remarkable trees and forests play in sustaining a healthy environment. To register a tree, view the Big Tree Registry Nomination form (PDF).
The Village of Channahon received its first Tree City USA designation from the Arbor Day Foundation in 1997 and received its 25th consecutive designation this year. Please view the Arbor Day Foundation website for more information on this program.
